As an abused spouse, child or parent, you can file an immigrant visa petition under the Violence Against Women Act, (VAWA). VAWA allows certain spouses, children and parents of US citizens and certain spouses and children of permanent residents (who have a Green Card) to file their own petition without the abuser's knowledge. This will allow victims to feel secure and to become independent of the abuser. The provisions of VAWA apply equally to women and men. Your abuser will not be notified that you have applied for immigration benefits under VAWA.
